The name "Bungalow" was derived from 'bangala' — a native hut in India, known for their comfortable spaces, high thatched roofs and overhanging eaves that offered ample cool shade. In the late 1800's in America, 'Bungalow' came to mean 'vacation cottage' or 'summer retreat'. Soon the popular Arts & Crafts movement adopted the aesthetic and enjoyed great success in creating demand for the attractive Bungalow lifestyle.
The Bungalow became synonymous with artistic pursuits, individual expression and style. Bungalow life meant informality, comfort and elegant simplicity of both materials and design. Many who lived in Bungalows became greatly enamoured of the lifestyle and, indeed, style. Some loyalists suggested that Bungalow living could promote better health and more harmonious family relationships.
With a style that stands the test of time, Bungalows are being re-discovered and are gaining enormous popularity for the very style and smart space that launched them to fame in the first place. I was fortunate to find The Cottages before I realized I was seriously looking. I had been vacationing in the Outer Banks for several years, dreaming of someday owning a beach home. Last year, plans changed and we visited Topsail Island. I saw the advertising for The Cottages and had to see them for myself. They were simply unique. I immediately fell in love with the front porches and the landscaping that created the feeling of an established neighborhood. For me, this signified a warm and inviting community. While all the homes maintained traditional bungalow architecture, no two homes were exactly alike. I was able to personalize both the interior and exterior of my home while making selections for colors, cabinetry, countertops and lighting fixtures. I even added a screened porch!
The Cottages are as much about community as they are about construction. I have made several new friends and found that I can have as much privacy as I desire.
There have been seasonal neighborhood gatherings as well as individually hosted parties. For me, being close enough to get to the ocean every day coupled with the beauty and friendly atmosphere of The Cottages has literally changed my life. Living here has turned my dream into reality.
